The U. S. Department of Energy has $1.1 million available through its 1980 Appropriate Energy Technology Small Grants Program in Region III, which includes Virginia.
The purpose of the program is to solicit ideas from citizens about energy conservation and the use of alternative energy resources. Last year, a total of $980,000 was awarded to applicants in Region III.
Examples of programs funded under the 1979 program include windpowered electric generator system for domestic hot water, solar-produced alcohol fuel for the small farm, solar heated firewood dryer for the homeowner and development of zoning and subdivision regulations to encourage new energy technologies.
Grants are awarded to individuals, non-profit organizations and institutions, state and local agencies, Indian tribes and small businesses in three categories:
