for election if they do not. (2) Supervisors, who are responsible for tax levies and appropriations which fund the schools, should have a closer relationship to the school board which oversees school affairs, makes school policies and recommends school budgets. (3) Since more than 50 percent of school funds are state and federal tax monies citizens have contributed, over and above local levies, some accountable elected representatives should be answerable to citizens for the expenditure of these monies.
Politics is the exercise of power and the relationship of that exercise among the people - those who act and those who feel the consequences of action. In a society where representative government is a tradition, to make the politics of the schools the business and prerogative of only a few is unacceptable. Once the board of supervisors is responsible for appointing school board members, elections for membership on the board will become more interesting and meaningful than they have' been in the past, and citizen participation in public affairs should increase.
A vote for the referendum question on June 17 is a vote to bring the governance of the schools closer to the community the schools serve.
