To the editor:
“Shall the present method of selecting the members of the county school board be changed from appointment by the School Trustee Election Board to appointment by the governing body of the County? Yes No."
Thus will the ballot appear for the special election on June 17, 1980, ordered by Judge VV. Shore Robertson on April 10 in Warrenton, concerning the school board of Rappahannock County. This election date, satisfying a 60 day provision in the law, will occur prior to the expiration of the terms of two school board members and if the referendum affirms the question, the change will permit the County Board of Supervisors to fill those vacancies.
Everyone interested in seeing the issue voted for on June 17 must take a personal interest in working for it. If the question is not affirmed,, a similar referendum cannot occur for another four years.
Many may wonder why this election has been ordered. The answer is a simple one: some parents of school children, some school employees and some citizens at large in the community feel that the policies and actions of the current school board are failing to meet school needs. These individuals circulated petitions, as provided by law, to request a referendum and more than the required number of signatures of voters was very quickly collected.
