Drained By Struggle
Jane’s husband lost his fight more than ten years ago after three major operations for cancer which began in the colon and spread through his digestive tract.
The battle that took John’s life left her drained "financially, physically and emotionally. It was devastating.” She credits what she calls the four F’s with seeing her through the ordeal—family, faith, ftiends and finances.
Cancer treatment is expensive. It can break a family financially and leave the survivors indebted for life. The cost of fighting the disease is one of the reasons why a diagnosis of cancer is so terrifying.
Both women were prepared for the financial outpour. A decade ago, hospital costs weren't so staggering so Jane was able to meet the 20 per cent that her husband's insurance didn’t cover. But with the .skyrocketing increases in medical care, she was emphatic not only in her advice that families have insurance coverage but that they read the fine print in their policies. "Ours didn’t cover private nursing,” she noted.
