HARRISONBURG — James Madison University’s annual Commonwealth Award for distinguished public service will be presented during the university's Government Day program Sept. 6 to Dr. G. Tyler Miller, retired JMU president and former state superintendent of public instruction. Miller was president of JMU (then Madison College) from 1949 to 1970 and was state superintendent of public instruction from 194649.
The Commonwealth Award is presented each fall by JMU and recognizes outstanding public service through government work. Only persons with careers in local or state government in non-elected capacities are eligible.
