By comparison, the 1979 rates for serious crimes in the planning district’s other counties were 21 per 1,000 in Culpeper, 17.4 in Fauquier, 19.8 in Madison and 23.2 in Orange.
At the same time, however, Rappahannock ranks at the bottom in the planning district with 21 percent for percentage of crimes cleared, a slight decrease over the 21.5 percent cleared in 1978. In Culpeper County, 42.6 percent of serious crimes were cleared, in Fauquier 35.9 percent, Madison 28.7 percent and Orange 40.5 percent.
In the state of Virginia, the serious crime rate totaled 43 per 1,000 residents'with 22.9 percent of crimes cleared. For reporting purposes, the state police include murdernon-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft as serious crimes.
