minimum competency exam for graduation will take extra classes this term, one in the reading lab and two in special math courses. He noted that the students will have three opportunities in the coming year to master the minimum competency test.

In attacking the everpresent problem with leaks in flat roofs, the board voted unanimously to authorize expenditure of $16,900 for the final base application to seal potential cracks in a section of the elementary school roof. The board members noted that the work was awarded to Bill Otis of Federicksburg on the basis of competitive bidding three years ago for the two-part project now in its final stage.

Under the instigation of Robert Eatham, the board agreed to consider at its September session the agenda form for its meetings suggested in the State School Board handbook. The major change in the new procedure involves, taking- up “items from board members” earlier in the sessions instead of as the meeting’s final item. Also up for discussion action in September are the career guidance program and procedure for resolution of complaints on Title I programs.

In other action, Newbill Miller was elected vicechairman of the school board and Nelson Lane elected as representative to instructional television in Harrisonburg, both filling positions held by Walter Masterson who resigned last week. Also, Nancy Reeve was chosen as the school board's representative on the pupil conduct and attendance committee mandated by the General Assembly’s Standards of Quality for education.
