Our first full night in Delhi, we slept like the proverbial log in our comfortable beds. Virginia for her usual seven hours or sO; I for four hours precisely. (It took me nearly a week to recover from jet lag.) I lay there, not at all unhappy but striving to persuade myself that we were really in India. Then, as the lovely Indian dawn broke, my wife awoke. Soon we were electrified by an unmistakable sound, the tlot-tlot of horses' hooves, lots of them. We staggered to the window.
