Never Alone
"We don’t do any of this ourselves," maintained Jane in explaining how friends, the second of her four F's, helped her through the years of her husband’s battle against, cancer. “It would have been a whole lot worse if not for our friends and relatives. They were always coming with something—food, an offer to drive us to George Washington Hospital or just their company. We cherished their concern and kindness.”
But as much as she appreciated the company of friends, Jane didn’t discuss her husband’s illness with them. “I didn’t feel the need to talk to any of my friends about it. And they respected our need for privacy. No one asked personal questions."
When Jane had to talk, she spoke with God or with her husband. Her faith was a bulwark during the years of John’s fight against cancer. “Being a Christian helped,” she stated with conviction. She remembered a night when, depressed and disheartened, she drifted off to sleep and heard a voice say “Lo. I’m with you always.”
“Our faith. Our family and friends. Their faith. It all ties together,” Jane said.
