Baines also agreed that higher police visibility acts as a deterent to many types of crimes. In addition to the new county-owned police cars he said, manpower increases by the state police could act to lower the crime rate here even further in the coming months. Baines reported that since July, a state trooper has been on duty in Rappahannock almost all the time. Previously, he said, the three state troopers assigned to the county often had to cover Page as well as Rappahannock. “Now we have 274 square miles instead of 500 square miles. It’s still alot for one trooper but it should help,” he concluded.
