Arrived at Agra, we were driven to another fine new hotel on the outskirts of the city. The Mughal Sheraton was differently planned from the big hotels in Delhi. It seemed to be only two stories high and spread out in long wings around the lawns and swimming-pool. We were led out to the terrace beside the pool and given cool drinks in big earthenware goblets rimmed with fresh flowers. Then we went indoors for lunch and another show of traditional dancing. The star was a young woman with a roguish twinkle in her eye, who gave us our first exhibition of dancing with six, seven, was it finally eight? brass pots piled on one’s head, then dancing on broken glass and on the edge of a couple of seemingly sharp swords. Lastly we were shown over some of the most luxurious, and expensive, guest-suites, furnished alternatively in Indian and in international style. From one of the windows I caught sight of the Taj Mahal in the distance.
