and sat down to an excellent meal. We hated to get up from the table, but we were overdue for the next item on our agenda.

Our buses carried us on a sightseeing tour of New and Old Delhi. First, the fabulous red tower, Qutb Minar, built by a Mosiem king long before the Mogul conquest, and the nearby iron pillar, which has stood for centuries in the open air without rusting. As we got down at the gate, we had our first encounter with the peddlers and beggars against whom we had been sternly warned. Here the vendors predominated, offering postcards, slides, toys, junk jewelry and heaven knows what besides. Of all ages, from four or five to venerable seniority, they swarmed around us, tireless, resourceful, persistent, chattering endlessly in what we took to be English. But they were invariably friendly and smiling, never rude or hectoring, and never trying to grab hold of us, as happens in some other countries. Obedient to our instructions, we resisted as best we could, grinning and quipping in return.
