by popular vote of the chance of visiting one of Delhi’s foremost sights. In the outcome, some of us went one way. some the other, in neither case for very long. All too soon, the buses carried us off through the fringes of the old city.
For the first time, we got a glimpse of local life remote in space and spirit from green parks, grand hotels and modernistic embassies. At the foot of the blufF crowned by the great mosque lay the fish market and the chicken market, with hundreds of live fowls in little wicker cages. Shoppers milled around. We wished we could have seen more of that Delhi.
Back in our room at last, Virginia and I felt a wave of weariness. Our day was not ended. That evening we were due for dinner at yet another fine hotel. But we knew too that next day we had to be up for an early start. We hated to miss anything but just could not muster up the energy to go. Lunch was still a vivid memory. So we dined off our gift fruit basket and the Scotch I had providently brought from home. Conscientious as ever, Virginia caught up on our washing before we tumbled into bed. Next morning, needless to say, one of our colleagues told us we had missed the best party yet. complete with fireworks. “Don’t mind him.’’ said his sweet, understanding wife. “They always say that about the one you skipped.”
