After a couple of hours, we halted for refreshment at a government rest house, about half way to Agra. It looked very smart with its trim lawns, flowerbeds and flowering trees. Again, snakecharmers and peddlers (not too many), an elephant (for two-rupee rides) and craft shops. Four men with an outside lawnmower seemed to have discovered the most painless and hilarious method of cutting grass I had ever seen. It was not at all clear who was doing the work, but they were all having a lot of fun. To my puzzlement, the place seemed to be called Dabchick—the name of a waterbird where I grew up.
