The Rappahannock Polo Club hosted the finals of the 4-Goal Senator’s Cup in Castleton on Sunday and lost 8-4 to the Woodlawn quartet from Middleburg.
As the home team sported a handicap aggregate of only three compared to Woodlawn’s four, the former received one before the match got underway. Rappahannock failed to add to this in the first period while Roger Steele dumped one in to tie it up.
Tony Cappola, a three-goal pro brought in by Bill Fannon, set up Rappahannock's second tally with an attempted No. 4 foul shot. The shot was stopped, but Jack Ferguson took the ball from the succeeding melee and scored while Woodlawn was held scoreless.
Luck ran against the home foursome in the third period as they threatened continually without success. On the other hand, the visitors, led by Phil Staples, scored twice to edge into the lead for the first time, making it 3-2 at the half.
Afternoon showers lowered temperatures, but that didn’t prevent tempers from running high. Disagreement over the umpiring prompted announcer Bob Gehringer to comment, “This may only be a 4-goal game, but there’s a lot of 10-goal cussin’ going on out there.” This
