To England For Polo
“Thanks to my dad, I’m playing polo,’’ Marcos acknowledged. With his father’s blessing and financial support, he left home at 16 for a job in England as a groom. With the skills he picked up on the ranch, Marcos quickly swapped curry combs and brushes for a mallet and a seat in the saddle. He was invited to join a British polo team and played there for four seasons, his introduction into professional ranks.
From England, he traveled across the Atlantic to Palm Beach, Florida, the American capital of the sport. There he met Bill Fannon through a friend who’d played with the Rappahannock polo enthusiast. Marcos moved on to polo fields in Houston, Texas, where Fannon contacted him with a job offer. ‘‘To improve my polo, I needed to play more. Mr. Fannon gave me a very good chance to do that and also an opportunity to make green horses,” Marcos said.
With his wife Diane, another polo fan who met Marcos last year when she was helping train and exercise polo ponies, and their two Australian sheep dogs, he moved to Castleton last month.
