The new arrivals brought Fannon’s string to 23. Each horse must be exercised daily in a rigorous training program that keeps them fit for the demands of polo. "They have to be able to go from full 'speed to a dead stop in two yards, turn around and go back full speed the other way,” Marco explained. The ponies must be able to maintain this frantic pace as they carry their mallet swinging riders after a white ball from one end to the other of a 900 foot field for 45 minutes of play. “It takes a lot of training. They have to be very, very fit,” the Argentinian emphasized over and over again.
Every Day Sessions
Reaching physical perfection is easier with a "made” horse. These experienced mounts can be taken out on leads, one, two or three tied halter to halter on each side of another pony and rider. But Fannon’s former cattle horses are not experienced mounts. “The horses in training have to be ridden and schooled every day. You can’t lead a green pony,” Marcos explained.
