many Virginians may travel long distances on turnpikes, expressways or interstate highways, requiring different driving techniques than on regular roads.
VDTS recommends following these expressway driving hints: —Keep a full gas tank and check tires. Before starting study a map and locate the correct exits. —Properly securing all passengers in appropriate safety belts and child restraints is a major step in effective protection against possible injury or death.
—When entering an expressway accelerate quickly to blend into existing traffic speed.
—Never slow down quickly on the highway. Keep up with the traffic flow and be sure to stay within the SS mph speed limit.
—Never stop or back up if an exit is missed. Go on to the next. In' emergencies drive as far onto the right highway shoulder as possible.
—When leaving the expressway be sure to slow down in the deceleration lane to the posted ramp speed.
“Nationally last year, highway accidents accounted for more than 53,000 deaths, nearly two million disabling injuries and S40 billion in property damage. That's not mentioning the individual medical and psychological costs," Hanna said.
