Shenandoah Valley living of a century or more ago will come to life at the New Market Battlefield Park Sunday, July 5, at the park’s fourth annual “19th Century Folk Days.”
The Bushong farm that lay in the middle of the Battle of New Market was largely selfcontained, with its own blacksmith shop, wheelwright house, loom house, outdoor bake oven, and wash house.
Activities will take place around these reconstructed log outbuildings. This year, in addition to the usual blacksmithing, outdoor bread baking, weaving, and a cannon firing demonstration, there will be lace-making by Mrs. Edna Coryell, 93, of White Post
Samples of the sourdough bread will be handed out to visitors, along with copies of the recipe used in the baking. Lending 19th century color to the scene will be a horse and buggy. There is no admission charge to the park.
A special film on early American folk art, “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness,” will be shown at the Hall of Valor museum at 11, 2, and 4 o’clock.
