Sunday afternoon’s littlepublicized polo match proved to be most entertaining as the home Middleburg quartet staged a late comeback to defeat Rappahannock 4-3.
The contest got off to a delayed start when one of the players failed to appear, forcing umpire John Gulick to take his place and Sherry Hamill to step in as offtciator.
Play in the first chukker was very even, flowing up and down the field. No one had a chance to score, leaving two zeros on the board as the match was played "on the flat” (without counting handicaps).
Rappahannock’s teamwork came to the fore in the second period with Bill Fannon’s 3-goal Argentinian pro Marcos Bignoli breaking loose with his long flying shots, thanks to the defensive efforts on the part of his teammates. A shot on goal hit the back of a horse to land in front of the goal mouth. Bignoli followed through and tapped it in for the day’s first point. The sole tally of the third chukker was also Rappahannock’s as Bignoli set up young Chet Fannon beautifully and Fannon came through to leave it 2-0 at the half.
