During the July Fourth weekend, defensive driving by all Virginians could .help make for the safest holiday on record, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation Safety.
Last year the three-day July Fourth weekend claimed the lives of 15 motorists, the second highest 1980 holiday driver fatality count. That’s seven more deaths on state highways than during the same 1979 period. Statistics show that the three-month summer period accounts for at least 40 percent of all highway mishaps.
“More than 80 percent of all highway crashes involve humgn error. Therefore, most of last year’s accidents could have been prevented by improved driver knowledge and skill.” said VDTS director John Hanna. -j,
