Despite an April travel increase of 2.2 percent, gasoline consumption in the state dropped to its lowest level since the 1974 oil embargo. The decline in gasoline consumption, and the resultant drop in fuel tax receipts, is cutting heavily into the highway budget, the department said.
Passenger vehicle travel on the state’s interstate, arterial, and primary systems was up by 2.4 percent over May, 1980, with passenger cars registered in other states leading the way with a 5.8 percent increase. Travel by Virginia ' passenger vehicles' also was up, 2.3 percent, over May a year ago.
Truck and bus travel showed an increase of 1.6 percent over the same month a year ago.
The travel figures were compiled from counts taken at 253 locations on the state's major highways, according to A. L. Thomas Jr., the department’s traffic and safety engineer.
