The availability of gasoline, warm weather and the fact that many workers will be off Friday, July 3 will undoubtedly boost vehicle travel on Virginia’s highways during the July 4th weekend.
The Virginia State Police, in an effort to keep traffic crashes, injuries and deaths at a minimum, will again participate in a Combined Accident Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.) with other states across the nation. Begun in 1978, the special program involves increasing the number of troopers patrolling selected sections of the State’s most heavily-traveled roads.
"There is no scientific method of knowing how many accidents do not happen because of the increased visibility of troopers on major holiday weekends,” says Colonel D. M. Slane, Department Superintendent. “But we do know that in more than 40 percent of all fatal crashes, speed—either excessive or too fast for conditions—is a contributing factor. We also know that the observance of troopers patrolling the highways encourages motorists to drive at safe speeds.”
Speed of course, is not the only factor in vehicle crashes. Drinking drivers are involved in 33 percent of all fatal crashes, and 89 percent of all crashes involve some type of violation.
Colonel Slane noted that Operation C.A.R.E. is not just an enforcement program requiring State Police participation. It is also an information program in which newspaper, radio and television representatives contribute by continually reminding motorists to drive safely and defensively.
Trout Stocking
In early July, the following area streams will be stocked for trout by the Virginia / Game Commission’s fish division: Hughes River in Madison County and Big Stoney Creek in Shenandoah County.
