On July IS, the curtain will close for the final time at Mountain Magic Cinema in Washington unless manager Freeman Allan determines that community support is sufficient to justify keeping the theater open as a non* profit enterprise.
After a full year’s operation with weekend movies, a classic film club, concerts, live plays and community programs. Mountain Magic shows a deficit of approximately $8,000, according to Allan.
In a letter to patrons that goes out this week, he notes that admission fees went toward film rental and shipment, theater rental, heating oil, utilities and advertising but did not provide enough to pay someone to manage the operation and run the projectors, tasks that require an average of 20 hours per
“I’ve paid myself in popcorn for the past year," Allan joked. “And I’ve been paid in the thanks and enthusiasm I’ve gotten from so many people in Rappahannock County for reopening and operating the theater,” he added in a more serious vein.
The theater’s financial problems are not due to lack of community patronage.
