In a dead run down a polo field, horse and rider frequently reach speeds of 45 to 50 miles per hour, making the inevitable collisions with opposing players fraught with danger. Marcos reported that the Guinness Book of World Records puts polo at the top of the list of dangerous sports, racking up more injuries than either rugby or auto racing. “I have seven broken bones from playing polo and I’m only 22 years old,” he added. “I saw a friend die on the polo field. I was pretty scared for the next two games but then I began to forget You never think that it will happen to you and so you don’t stay afraid.”
Marcos will continue training and playing for Fannon during the summer polo season here and then the two plan to travel to Florida where the Rappahannock team will compete in handicap tournaments, the category of play determined by the combined handicap of all four team members. Players start with a minus one rating, Marcos reported. Bill Fannon and his son Chet have both advanced to zero and will probably be awarded one goal handicaps by this winter while the Argentinian expects to move up to a four goal ranking. In tournament play, teams compete in low goal (five to 12 total handicap), medium goal (12-18) and high goal (18-26)
