There have been instances where a pet immunized against rabies has come down with the disease after being bitten by a rabid animal. A pet exposed to rabies should be reported to the health department even if the dog or cat has been immunized. Rabies booster shots can be given and generally, the pet must be quarantined.

Humans exposed to rabies must undergo treatment which consists of a hyperimmune globulin injection followed by a series of five vaccinations at intervals of three days, one week, two weeks and 28 days. Without treatment, rabies is fatal.
