Miller had gotten an opinion from the state that town assessments could not be lowered as a group. “It’s simply not fair that Washington residents be assessed on a higher level,” Giles repeated. “But they cannot be lowered in a blanket change," Miller said. “I am relaying this information as requested.”
Miller reported that a hydrant check at the Episcopal Church revealed a flow of 400 gallons a minute and told the Council that checks would be made on the two hydrants on Piedmont Avenue.
In other business, the Council:
—Approved Diane Bruce’s request that the newly formed Rappahannock Association for Arts and the Community be allowed to conduct a block dance on July 3;
— Authorized council Member Dorothy Hawkins to have trash cans constructed for the town pending receipt of a grant for w hich Hawkins had previously applied:
—Heard from councilman Charlie Jenkins that heavy rains had eliminated the necessity of pumping water from tow n wells.
All council members were present at the meeting and were sworn in after the meeting’s adjournament. Mayor Miller and council members Brad Fisher, Dorothy Hawkins, Taylor Updike, C. E. Giles, and Charlie Jenkins officially began their new terms with Wednesday’s meeting.
