To Barksdale
To the editor:
In your issue of June 10th you quote me as having said to the supervisors on June 7th “Mr. Williams and Mr. Barksdale (members of the Equalization Board) are sick and tired of their jobs and want to run from it now'." I checked with you directly and you maintain that those were my exact words. Having no recording of my words, I must and do accept your reporting of them.
My neighbor Mr. Barksdale was understandably upset by the words “and want to run from it now,” since he felt that they implied that he was a man who would shirk, or run from, his sworn duty as a public official.
Nothing was further from my mind. I have known Mr. Barksdale since I was a young boy in Flint Hill and, based on his 40 years of dedicated public service to the county and his special knowledge and experience, I enthusiastically supported his appointment by the Judge to the Equalization Board. I certainly would not have done so had I believed he was capable of "running from" a public duty undertaken by him.
