singles, Dennis Fairbrother came out on top in his match with Willie Zuco and will go up against the winner of the Keeton Barnes - D. Brown contest. John Baumgardner defeated Jon Lee and will now play Steve Parlegreco. Phillip Strange bested Larry Louge (6-0, 6-0), and will face upset winner Steve Scoggins who ousted second-seeded Rod Kirkpatrick from men’s singles play (4-6, 6-3, 6-2).

Merle and Phillip Strange defeated Burke and Carol Hertz in mixed doubles (6-1, 6-1) and will face another husband and wife team, Steve and Poula Parlegreco, in round two.

Werner and Jane Krebser forfeited their match against Steve Ellis and Faye Crescenti when Dr. Krebser opted for getting in hay over playing tennis. The EllisCrescenti team now plays Tom Massie and Theresa McLawhorn. Rayner Snead and Marjorie Exton upended Dennis and Cheryl Fairbrother (7-5, 4-6, 6-4) to play Diane Bruce and Bobby Gehringer who had a bye in the opening round.
