At a special meeting on Monday, the Rappahannock supervisors reappointed Nelson Lane, representtive from Stonewall-Haw thorne District, to a four-year term on the county school board.
Lane presented the supervisors with a stack of petitions in his support, signed, he said, by his fellow school board members and 407 residents of StonewallHawthorne District.
"This young man has the support of the people who know his work best—the school board," said board member Robert Eastham, noting that Lane had done an excellent job in working with him on a two months project involving the complete analysis of the board's insurance coverage.
Mary Botts Qiiaintance, principal and teacher in the county's public schools for 48 years, asked the supervisors to name Jimmy Cannon to the seat which becomes vacant June 30 with the expiration of Lanes' current term. Cannon couldn’t be at Monday’s supervisor session, she said, because “he’s out earning a living for his wife and child.”
Cannon was born and raised in the county and “has first-hand knowledge of our school problems that Nelson could not possibly have gained during his short time in Rappahannock,” Mrs. Quaintance said.
