THE BOARD of Supervisors
was able to hold
the tax rate steady at $4.10. The reason cited by the supervisors for being able to maintain the current rate was the low level of school age population and an increase in the county’s tax base. The board also discussed zoning problems in regard to need for additional funds. Since there has been pressure from outside entrepeneurs to subdivide lots into V2 acres, zoning administrator Col. E.A. McNear proposed that he be authorized to open his zoning office one more day a week to deal with development pressures. The increase in days translated into a $4,000 increase in the budget. This increase was felt to be necessary and the board approved it unanimously.
The old iron truss bridge on Laurel Mills was replaced with a new concrete structure. The Board of Supervisors debated the point and on the basis of safety it was decided that a new bridge should be built as recommended by Highway Engineer James Skeens. The bridge was said to have been structurally weak for the 7 ton limit.
