Contestants may have returned lobs and smashes while leaping puddles but despite the rainy weather over the past two weeks, play in the Rappahannock Recreation Authority’s annual tennis tournament has advanced to the second rou nd.
In women’s singles, Lois Manookian defeated Candy Coombs and will now face top-seeded contender Paula Parlegreco, last year’s winner. Faye Crescenti downed Sharon Luke and now goes on to battle Theresa McLawhorn, second-seeded player. Both Parlagreco and McLawhorn had byes in the opening round.
Also with byes in the First round. Meryle Strange will play Diane Bruce in round two of women’s singles and Jean Lillard will play Janet Moore who advanced on a forfeit by L. Arnold.
In men's singles, topseeded Keith Hutchinson is the only player currently at round three after defeating Avery Faulkner in the second round. Faulkner downed Doug Baumgardner to advance while Hutchinson had a bye.

Opening
Virginia State Parks opened the 1982 summer operating season on Memorial Day Weekend and set record attendance figures despite occasional thunderstorms across the state, announced Commissioner of State Parks Ronald D. Sutton. Over the four-day weekend this year, 116,334 persons visited the state parks, an increase of .5 percent over the same period in 1981 (115,741 visitors).
Park visitors can take advantageof a wide variety of recreational and informational offerings throughout the state, including camping, swimming, hiking, interpretive exhibits, evening programs, guided walks, picnicking and fishing.
