Architect Hunter Spencer presented 17 pages of blueprints to supervisors J. R. Latham and Hubert Gilkey on Thursday, clearing the way for the jail renovation project to be put out for bids.
But instead of the $65,000 originally projected for the work, the estimate has climbed to $ 115,000.
At an informal meeting Thursday afternoon with Latham, Gilkey, Sheriff W. A. Buntin and former county engineer Fanning Baumgardner. Spencer reported that the State Department of Corrections had first asked to have an independent cost estimate done on the finished plan for the jail renovation. But the Department settled instead on having an estimate from a local builder since there are no professional estimators closer than Charlottesville and the Washington metropolitan area where construction costs are higher. The figures given to the supervisors on Thursday came from El wood Smoot of Eulpeper, Spencer said. Explaining the $50,000 ncrease since his original sstimate last July. Spencer said "there are items in here ve had no idea we would be loing when we started."
