It’s time to forget the negative for a few days. Thanksgiving is the traditional count-your-blessings holiday and folks in Rappahannock County have a longer list of blessings than many Americans. We owe it to ourselves and our county to stop and reflect on the unique environment that we have around us.
We share a sense of community and a feeling of belonging. In school, our children are individuals, not just a name connected to a face. In church, we know the family in the next pew. The storekeepers don’t need three identifications and a life history when we write a check—they see us every day. If we run afoul of the police, we’re treated like honest citizens who’ve made a mistake rather than hardened criminals. We get the benefit of the doubt until we show continued disregard for the law.
The people we see on county business know most of us by name. When we drive down the highway, acquaintances and strangers alike wave hello.
