On the other hand, year-end production of many Virginia crops would have been lower without favorable weather in many parts of the State during late summer and early fall. As an example of the influence of weather on production, the August expected yield for corn was put at 90 bushels per acre and the October estimate was 96. This added 7 percent to total corn production for 1982. For the same time period (August estimates and October estimates), fluecured tobacco moved from 1850 pounds per acre to 1880 (2 percent increase); burley tobacco from 2250 pounds per acre to 2400 pounds per acre (7 percent increase); peanuts moved from 2900 pounds per acre to 2950 (2 percent increase); and the August and October yield estimates for soybeans held at 28 bushels per acre. Rainfall was very timely and pulled soybeans out of some possible periods of stress.
