The town of Washington may be facing a financial crunch, judging by an announcement front Rappahannock’s accountant, Wally Cox, at Monday’s meeting of the county board of supervisors.
He reported that the treasurer had been using the wrong formula for dispersal of sales tax revenue for the past three years, resulting in a $2,438.79 over-payment to the town. According to Cox, the formula for sales tax dispersal came from thenAttorney General Marshall Coleman. The accountant said he’s advised the treasurer to withhold the scales tax payment from the town until the money is recovered. “It will take a considerable amount of time to recover the $2,438.79 by withholding the monthly payments!” Cox added.
