Here in the Blue Ridge foothills, the Thornton River curves down a hollow, under an old one-lane bridge, and through a town that has changed little since its beginnings as a commercial crossroads center more than a century and a half ago. This is Sperryville, a tiny community built just below a gaP in the mountains—"Thornton’s Gap”— which allowed early travelers a pass through the mountains and travelers of the past halfcentury access to Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah National Park.
