Frank Reynolds, staff attorney with the Warrentonbased Piedmont Environmental Council, reported that PEC's experience with historical designations has been "nothing but positive.” In the nine-county region covered by the environmental organization, PEC has found that historic designation improves property values. “It gets places on the map. It helps business," Reynolds said, adding that travelers watch for the markers which the Landmarks Commission erects.

“It adds to the local tax base and enhances property values,” Commonwealth's Attorney Douglas Baumgardner agreed. “That’s what has happened to the town of Washington (the county’s other historically designated village)."
