The Rappahannock supervisors gave enthusiastic endorsement on Monday to a legislative proposal that would add $10 to fines imposed for moving traffic violations with the surcharge to go for support of emergency services.
Frankie Huff, representing the county’s Fire and Rescue Association, told the board that the money added to fines levied for traffic violations, crashes and drunk driving would be deposited in the Virginia Rescue Squad Assistance Fund. He recalled that the $20,000 for Flint Hill’s new ambulance came from the Assistance Fund.
Ninety percent of motor vehicle accidents involve traffic violations. Huff reported. “The violators are the ones who create a lot of work for the rescue squads,” he said, maintaining that those violators should rightfully be assessed the extra fine to support the state's rescue system.
“It sounds like a good tax." responded supervisor H. B. Wood. "It's as fair as you can get!" Clarence Baldwin agreed.
