If you have a small garden plot or have been applying lime regularly, we recommend that you take a soil sample before spreading wood ashes. Also, take a soil sample every three or four years to make sure the pH doesn’t go much above 6.5. Suggested rates are 10-20 lbs. of wood ashes per 1,000 sq. ft. per year. A 10-quart pail, filled to within 2” of the top, will hold about 5 lbs. of wood ashes, so 2-4 pails may be used per 1,000 sq. ft. Rototill or mix the wood ashes into the soil before planting.
The reason for the 20 lb. per 1,000 sq. ft. per year maximum for wood ash application is that wood ashes may contain 1-3 lbs. of boron per ton. At a rate of 50 lbs. per acred ton per acre), toxicity problems may develop.
Since asparagus plants require relatively high rates of boron, the asparagus patch is an excellent place to start spreading your wood ashes. Let the ashes set overnight and cool before spreading over the asparagus crowns.
