Neighborhood Watch is “virtually cost-free to the tax payers, at least the way it was handled in LA,” Evans said. “It was organized by the police on a volunteer basis. In the places where we used Neighborhood Watch, crime did go down.
“But policemen can’t do it by themselves,” he emphasized. “They need the active support and involvement of the community.”
Evans hopes that local civics groups and organizations will sponsor forums and meet-thecandidates programs so that he will have an opportunity to present his ideas on law enforcement to the people of the county. “Campaigning is new to me. I’ve never run for anything before—not even a high school office,” he joked. “But I know I’m qualified for the office, I’d be a good, even-handed sheriff. I see no reason not to run. Why wait the four years until next time?”
