He praised the first and fourth quarter defense put up by the Panthers and especially complimented Dunn and Jeff Porter.
RCHS used a box-in-one on the Cougars' leading scorer Calvin Logan, holding him to six points under his average of 26. The defense forced Manassas Park to resort to a lot of outside shots and if it hadn’t been for the Cougars' 13 offensive rebounds, the point spread would have been much wider than 24.
Dawson expressed satisfaction with his squad’s shot selection, noting that it has improved tremendously since the season began, fie pointed out that 38 of the Panthers’ shots came in the lane area and of that total, they converted on 24.
Rapp’s game-winning fullcourt press was ably directed by guards Pops Aylor and Robert Myers. Myers accounted for seven of RCHS’s 21 assists while Aylor was credited with four. The press came up with 16 steals. It appeared that if the fullcourt defense had been revved up earlier, Rappahannock might not have heedied a fourth quarter spurt to ensure victory.
Mike Leake was a star at both ends of the court. Rappahannock’s big center had a game high 24 points, hitting nine of 12 shots. He pulled IS rebounds to give the Panthers the edge in the battle of the boards and managed four assists. Leake, who is the Bull Run District’s scoring leader, now needs just seven more points to post a career mark of 1,000.
Rappahannock had three other players as well in double figures against the Cougars: Myers connected for ten (all. in the second half), Doyle Dunn had 18 and Pops Aylor had his season high of ten. Dunn has been playing inspired ball since coming back from the Christmas break. He hit seven of nine shots at Manassas Park and was especially consistent on defense.
