If any one special interest group has struck a chord in the public and in the legislature it has to be Many Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Started by a group of mothers ' whose children have died at the hands of a drunk driver, the group has grown with amazing speed to include and now includes a wide cross-section of citizens in Virginia. This year, they are pushing legislation to raise the legal drinking age. Several proposals are floating around.
I favor raising the age limit to 19 at the minimum and possibly higher. Statistics show beyond a doubt that drunken teenage drivers cause significantly more deaths in accidents than any other single group. I realize that most young people are mature enough at age 18 to handle this privilege responsibly. But the minority^ of those who aren’t hav<: produced statistics too shocking to ignore. I certainly can’t ignore them and I intend to vote in favor of raising the legal drinking age. I encourage my constituents to relay their views to me during the session at 910 Capitol Street, Richmond, VA 23219 Telephone (804) 786-7288.
