A fire in the early morning hours Sunday left Blue Ridge Guns of Amlssville a smouldering pile of debris and sent two fire fighters to Fauquier Hospital.
According to Amissville fire chief Carl James, Robert and Ruth Bowers, proprietors of the gun shop, were awakened in their adjacent living quarters by a passing motorist who spotted the fire, stopped and activated the shop's security alarm. “The smoke was so heavy, they could barely breathe. They just did escape in time," said James, noting that neither the business nor the attached living quarters was equipped with a smoke detector.
James, who had an emergency vehicle at his residence, was first at the scene in response to the 2:25 a.m. alarm. He found large clouds of black smoke billowing from the structure with flames in the eaves of the building fanned by a 40 mile per hour wind.
An Amissville truck arrived seconds later. “We had just begun an interior attack when the shells started going off,” James reported. “We could hear them exploding. I ordered the men out, due to the life hazard.”
