In a gala affair held Saturday, January 8, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Barbour, Sr. of Washington celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reaffirmation of their vows and an exchange of rings by candlelight.
The bride wore an oyster white satin gown with long sleeves, vee-neck, straight bodice and flair skirt. Mr. Barbour wore a dark suit, white shirt and black bow tie.
The couple’s family made up the wedding party. Mrs. Joan Bailey, wearing a maroon satin gown, was matron of honor and Mr. John Barbour, Jr. was the best man. Mr. James R. Freeman, Sr. and Mrs. John Barbdur, Jr., who wore an evening suit of oyster white satin, lit the candles for the ceremony which was held at the Sperryville Fire Department annex. Mr. Theodus Barbour, Sr. and Mrs. Charlotte Freeman, in a gown of light navy satin, pinned the corsages.
As the wedatntf part took its place under an arch trimmed in green boughs and golden bells, the Barbours’ grandsons, Dexter and James Freeman, Jr., sang a favorite hymn, “God Smiled on Me.” Scriptual reading was offered by Deacon Lewis Butler followed by the Lord’s Prayer, sung by James Freeman, Sr. and James, Jr. Rev. Wendell Grant performed the wedding ceremony and Rev. John R. Pendleton offered the wedding prayer.
James Freeman. Jr. and Ms. Marie A. Davis sang “You Light up my Life” and “Endless Love” and William “Pete” Aylor and Timmy Clanagan led music for entertainment.
The annex was decorated in a yellow and white color scheme with a large golden ball hanging from the ceiling. Refreshments included three sheet cakes and a four-tiered wedding cake made by Mrs. Nellie Allsberry of Strasburg. All four cakes wore decorated with yellow and white icing. A delicious dinner was arranged and served by Mrs. Charlotte Freeman and her assistant, Mrs. Lillian Aylor.
