5. The protection of the environment reaches from very limited concerns over such things as endangered insects to preverving the earth itself as a habitable planet. Those considered from outside Rappahannock County included Robert Heilbronner, who in a book published a few years ago said that human life on earth would cease within 150 years because of population pressure, nuclear war, the warming or cooling of the atmosphere, (I forget which) and other threatening Developments. (He has since given the earth an extension of time). Lady Bird Johnson, who as First Lady, and since, has shown an interest in environment and in beautification, and who was once'sefted in a poem conceriietys about ecology, especially the relationship of bees, to fruits, flowers and berries, a relationship understood in this county was considered. This was the poem: inspired by the need to defend a quota on foreign honey so that United States bee keepers would not be discouraged and stop keeping bees;
Now a quota on honey
May seem very funny
To people who talk on T.V.
But consider the tree
In need of a bee
To insure its posterity
The standard Manhattan
Without a cherry
And no lemon peel
For the dry martini
The empty hive, the exiled queen
The disconsolate drone
The last clover sown
And in search of one flower
Lady Bird wandering
Through that dismal, gray
Desolate, terminal spring.”
