A drifter with a long list of prior convictions was found guilty of breaking and entering, credit card theft and petty larceny last Thursday in Rappahannock’s circuit court. Accepting the jury’s recommendation. Judge Thomas Horne imposed a total sentence of 4‘/a years on Clarence Anthony Stewart.
Stewart, 35, of no fixed address, has 25 prior arrests, primarily for larceny and robbery, according to FBI records. His trail of crimes—all nonviolent—extends from coastto-coast with Stewart wanted for misdemeanor offenses in California and sought for extradition by Florida on parole violations.
Stewart was charged here with breaking and entering Jhe residence of Brion Patterson in Boston on or about July 29 and taking his credit cards, check book and various other items.
Jean Lillard, partner in the Flint Hill Storehouse, testified that Stewart tried on July 29 to cash a check drawn on the Rappahannock National Bank from Brion Patterson’s account, showing two credit cards in Patterson’s name as identification. Lillard said she knew Patterson, a science teacher at the county high school, by sight. “He’s white. This man was black,’’ she added. Lillard told the court that she telephoned the bank to determine if it had accounts for two Brion Pattersons and was told that the bank numbered only one person by that name among its clients.
