tried out. They took a series of written tests, then competed orally. "Some of the students who knew a lot of written answers were less successful orally,” Wayland said. “They just couldn’t think fast enough.”
Several eliminated reduced the pop quiz team to thirteen members: Tara Fisher, Teri Tylek, Shannon Streagle, Joe McCullough, Debby Lysik, Jonathan Watson, Ann Oliver, Dawn Watson, Cheryl Atkinson, Chuck Stephenson, Peggy Stephenson, James Dennis, and Will Oliver.
All of these will go to Harrisonburg the last week of January. Between now and then, sponsors will pick the four to compete on television. Parents, teachers and friends will be scouting around for spots in the county that get WVPT.
“I’m sure no one expects that little Rappahannock will win,” Wayland said. “We think they’ll be surprised.”
GED Course
Offered
High school dftpouts can return to classes with other adults and earn a high school diploma. Classes to prepare students to pass the General Education Development test for a GED certificate are being offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Piedmont Technical Education Center. The classes start at 6:45 p.m. About 100 students go through the classes each year. Individuals are divided into four sections of English and mathematics, depending on the level at which they are starting. The courses are taught with a lot of individualized instruction, rather than the traditional atthe-blackboard lecturing.
