The Rappahannock JV Panthers won a cliff hanger in Manassas Park last Friday night, edging out the Cougars in five overtimes, 46-42, to stay at the top of the Bull Run rankings.
In a whoever-has-the-balllast-wins contest, the Panthers trailed 30-28 with six seconds on the clock. It looked grim for RCHS but then the Manassas Park coach was tagged with a technical foul. H. B. Wood sank both shots under pressure and sent the game into overtime.
Playing slow-down ball, the Panthers couldn’t put it away in the first four overtime periods. But in the fifth, a tired but pumped up JV squad decided to take it to the Cougars and came away with a 46-42 win.
With Tommy Jenkins out on five fouls and Rapp’s other guns, Rob Brown and Chucky Jenkins, holding four fouls apiece, H. B. Wood stepped into the spotlight and hit eight of 11 foul shots to give the Panthers the win. Wood and Brown were leading scorers for RCHS with 12 points apiece. Deryk Moore had eight points and six crucial steals.
The Panther victory was soured a little by the news that freshman center Tommy Jenkins had cut his foot in the shower room after the game and will be out for an undetermined length of time.
Last week, the JV proved that it’s the year of the Panther in junior varsity as well as varsity competition.
