Representatives of Potomac Edison appeared before the Washington Town Council last Wednesday to request a renewal of its franchise agreement with the town.
Kenneth H. Nichols, Area Engineering Supervisor, and James C. Poffenberger, Assistant Division Manager, told the council that Potomac Edison’s agreement with the town would expire in June.
PofTenberger said that the franchise renewal would come in the form of a town ordinance, which would be passed after a month of advertising and a public hearing.
“So it’s none too early to start thinking about this franchise,” Poffenberger said.
“The lease agreement made June 27, 1959, expires June 24, 1983,” Poffenberger went on. He gave the council members copies of the ordinance proposed by Potomac Edison, saying that he would return next month to hear their reaction.
“If you don’t mind, I’d prefer that you read it through with us tonight,” Mayor Newbill Miller said.
Council member Dorothy Hawkins objected to the inclusion of “towers” in the list of items that the ordinance would give the utility the right to construct: “...to acquire, erect, reconstruct, maintain, and use, if now constructed to reconstruct,
